In order to expand the lifespan of your AirPods, Apple is including a new feature as part of its iOS 14 – the brand new Operating System.
This OS is set to reduce the time within which the batteries of your AirPods will begin to age by learning how often and when you charge them and then predicting when to stop charging them automatically. Instead of charging itself at 100%, the AirPods will charge to 80% at first and then resume later so as not to sit at 100% capacity for extended periods of time.
Most modern products, as in the case of Apple as well, run on lithium-ion batteries and according to experts, these devices should not be 100% charged all the time. Minimizing the top off these batteries, you can expand their lifetimes. This is not a new idea, though, with most phones and laptops in the market including Apple products offer a feature called Optimized Battery Charging which keeps the batteries from charging excessively, thereby preventing their premature departure.
The AirPods need this feature more desperately than ever since laptops and phones can be taken to a service center and replaced with new batteries. AirPods do not have the feature of a detachable battery with their non-modular and glued together design, and are more or less disposable rather than an investment.
